The single biggest factor in whether a show works is who’s on stage. Production design and costume and music all matter — but a charismatic performer can carry a flawed show, and a great show with weak performers reads as cheap. Casting is therefore the most consequential decision in any KDABRA production.
Where We Look
We cast from circus academies, opera houses, contemporary dance companies, fashion runways, and increasingly from TikTok. The talent pool isn’t where it was ten years ago — performers who never trained traditionally are showing up with viral skill levels.
The Three-Round Audition
Round one is technical — can the performer execute? Round two is chemistry — can they hold a stage with two other performers? Round three is character — can they sustain a 90-minute show as the version of themselves the audience needs to believe in?
The Underrated Skill — Stamina
Stamina is the most underrated trait in stage performers. A six-night-per-week residency demands a different physical engine than a one-off gala. Casting for stamina is a deliberate filter we apply to residency casting that we relax for one-off engagements.
The Contract Layer
The right performer is no good if the contract doesn’t lock them in. Our casting team works with a legal team to structure contracts that include rehearsal commitment, exclusivity windows, replacement clauses, and an artist-care package. The artist-care line is often what wins a top performer over a competitor.
What We Won’t Do
We don’t cast unprepared. We don’t substitute named performers without client approval. We don’t compromise on chemistry to fit a fee budget — we’d rather lose the booking than under-cast it.
