The Three-Layer Risk Model
Performer risk — physical safety of the cast. Audience risk — physical safety of spectators. Venue risk — structural and operational safety of the building. Every show is assessed against all three before any rehearsal begins.
Insurance That Actually Covers
Public liability minimums vary by jurisdiction; the practical minimum for a multi-performer aerial show is significantly higher than statutory minimums. We require certificates filed with the venue 30 days pre-show.
The Pre-Show Inspection
Every rigging point is inspected daily. Every harness, every clip, every load-bearing surface. The inspection takes 90 minutes. It happens every show. There is no exception.
The Stop Authority
Any performer can stop a number. The production stage manager can stop the show. The venue’s safety officer can stop the show. Multiple stop authorities reduce single-point-of-failure risk. The cultural norm — that stopping is celebrated, never penalised — is what makes the policy work.
Fire Safety
Shows with fire elements require certified fire safety officers, fire-rated set materials, and pre-approved blocking. No exceptions. No improvisation.
The Incident Log
Every near-miss is logged. Patterns in near-misses predict future incidents. The teams that read their incident log monthly are the teams that don’t have major incidents.
The Insurance Question Producers Don’t Ask
“What’s the deductible structure?” High-deductible policies are cheaper but expose the producer to first-loss costs. Low-deductible policies cost more upfront but protect the production’s cashflow in the event of a claim. Pick deliberately.
